Shetlander Cecil Tait has worked with us to create a bespoke collection of handcrafted objects for Lerwick Distillery. He's created us a set of unique darkened wood pieces, using a method known as ebonizing.

Ebonizing creates a dark, graphic look that emphasises the form of a piece. A Steel wool and vinegar recipe are key to give depth and darkness to the tannin of the wood, whilst still allowing for aspects of the grain to shine through. Since this is a reactive finish, it penetrates deeper into the wood than a stain or dye that sits on top, creating a natural, durable black tone.

The result are unique distinctive and tactile pieces with a distinctive charcoal colour. Cecil's designs clearly have a Scandi influence, simple, beautiful, perfect, which sits perfectly with our ethos.

The Maker

Shetlander Cecil Tait is the founder and master craftsman of Paparwark Furniture, renowned for design, high quality products and his innovative interpretation of traditional techniques.

He studied furniture design in Glasgow and High Wycombe, and returned to Shetland inspired to reflect, in his individually handcrafted pieces, the landscape, nature and culture of the Shetland Islands.

Cecil works from his workshop overlooking St. Ninians Isle on Shetland's West coast.
And like many Shetlanders he still has to find time to work on the family croft where they have 150 ewes and 50 hens, sell free range eggs from outside the farmhouse and have wool spun into high quality yarn. If you visit Shetland you must stop by.

We've established 'MAKERS FOR LERWICK DISTILLERY' to promote fine artisans, artists and craftspeople who share our ethos for excellent products, made with passion and patiently by hand.
